Urban living trend seen in rise of demolition/rebuilds in East Grand Rapids

EAST GRAND RAPIDS – Mario Orsini, his wife Kristy and two young children will soon move to East Grand Rapids. They are among a growing number of local residents who have replaced an existing home with a new one.

“I have done about a dozen in the past year,” builder and developer Joel Peterson said of the “demolish and rebuild” frenzy in the city.

But Peterson, who lives in East Grand Rapids and looks for opportunities to rebuild homes, is not the only one on board with the concept. According to East Grand Rapids zoning administrator Tom Faasse, while investors such as Peterson find existing homes on non-conforming lots to replace, other East Grand Rapids homeowners are choosing the option as well.
